How Getting Fired Led Me to Start Skinchology | A Story of Healing & Purpose

Little known fact, I didn’t start Skinchology because I wanted to.

I started it because I had no other choice.

Blindsided and Betrayed: The Moment Everything Changed

In April 2015, I was let go from a job that I loved. Not because I wasn’t good at what I did – but because I was….let me explain.

I was working at a waxing studio here in Houston, and the regional director called to tell me there was an “investigation” into my login activity.

Apparently, I had accessed the backend scheduling system too many times at odd hours.

Backstory. I wasn’t hacking anything, and if you know me you know that I can barely turn on the TV without messing it up, I used to ghostwrite articles about skincare and makeup for companies and before bed (usually around 2am), I would check my schedule. The store manager had given me access, and with how often things shifted, I just needed to know if I was coming in at 10 or 2.

But instead of asking me what was going on, they assumed I was up to no good and fired me.

The Pain That Sparked a Purpose

I remember speaking with one of the owners begging him to tell me the real reason he was firing me because I’d put my heart and soul into that company. I wasn’t even a manager and I was opening up stores, pulling inventory ANNNND I was one of their highest grossing employees across the country.

It wasn’t just confusing, it was humiliating.

Especially for someone like me, who is not techy and just wanted to do my job.

But what stung most wasn’t being let go, it was being betrayed. People I worked with every day didn’t speak up. And the same manager who gave me access? Come to find out later, she was the one stealing clients under someone else’s login.

A Divine Nudge and a Decision to Trust

The whole thing felt like a setup. And a lesson. And while sitting on my floor crying to the man to reconsider, I heard the voice of God to let go. I argued with God about this. It didn’t make sense, I didn’t have the money to start anything, but yet Spirit said, I got you.

That promise would lead me straight to where I was meant to be.

This wasn’t about skill. It was about space. And I was no longer in the space that could hold me.

I finally listened to the whispers that had been getting louder and louder:
“You don’t belong in their system. You were meant to build your own.”

So I did.

Building from Nothing but Vision and Heart

With nothing but angel investors and a promise, I started Skinchology.
At the time, my client list was tiny – honestly, just my best friend Angela.
There wasn’t a fancy marketing plan or even a finalized name yet.
Still, I had vision. My hands knew the work. My heart knew the purpose.

I didn’t realize it at the time, but that was the beginning of redefining what self-care truly meant – something I talk more about here.

And honestly? That’s what’s carried me through.

10 Years Later: A Sanctuary for Skin and Soul

Skinchology is the space I didn’t know I needed.

It’s where I stopped dimming my light.

It’s where I turned my background in Family & Consumer Sciences and counseling into something revolutionary, using what I know about the connection between individuals, families, systems, and wellness to create a healing space that’s rooted in my first love of beauty, science, and real care.

Every wax, every facial, every service we offer at Skinchology, is built on that same foundation of healing and intention.

More Than Skin Deep: The Healing That Happens Here

I don’t just wax bodies.
I don’t just treat skin.
Beyond technique, I help uncover what’s underneath.
These aren’t just self-care services – they’re principles I live by.

Skinchology has grown with me over the past decade. We’ve survived economic shifts, political tension, forces of nature, a global pandemic, and the unpredictable rhythms of entrepreneurship. But more than anything, we’ve evolved.

Because this isn’t just about skin.
It never has been.

This is about healing, safety, and transformation. It’s about creating space where every body, regardless of shape, size, color, gender, or orientation – can come as they are and leave feeling a little more whole.

I’ve witnessed deep conversations spark from a routine appointment. I’ve seen people cry during a facial because it was the first time they were truly touched with intention. And I’ve had clients tell me this is the only place where they feel seen – not just skin deep but soul deep.

What This Next Chapter Means for You, and for Us

Now, as I launch this new website and this next chapter of Skinchology, I’m standing in full agreement with where this brand is going:

  • We’re still a healing space.
  • We’re still rooted in science and therapy.
  • But we’re also a movement.

A movement toward deeper care.
More honest conversations.
And more radical rest and self-love in a world that constantly demands our labor but rarely holds space for our being.

So whether you’ve been rocking with me since day one or you’re just now finding your way here – thank you.

You’re a part of this story now.

And trust me – this next chapter? It’s personal.
