Redefining Self-Care: Beyond the Bubble Bath

Let’s go ahead and clear the air:

Self-care is not a candle and a $4 face mask from the beauty supply.
A bubble bath with background jazz and a glass of wine sounds cute, but that’s not the full picture.
Most importantly, it’s not something we only do when we’re burned out and backed into a corner.

Somewhere along the way, the beauty industry made self-care feel like a trend—
something cute to post on Instagram instead of a discipline to live by.
However, if you’ve ever sat in my treatment room, you know…

We do self-care differently at Skinchology.

For Me, Self-Care Started as Survival

That shift started the day I was let go – a story I shared in this post about how Skinchology was born.

Back when I was working in high-pressure environments…
Dealing with loss…
Navigating betrayal…
And being pushed into entrepreneurship with nothing but my hands and my faith—

I wasn’t scheduling bubble baths.
I was trying to keep my spirit from crumbling.

Ultimately, I created Skinchology out of necessity, not convenience.
Because of that, self-care became my foundation.

Self-Care Means Doing What You Were Never Taught

It meant creating boundaries I didn’t grow up seeing.
Over time, leaving environments that didn’t value me became necessary.
I also had to learn how to rest without guilt…
to cry without shame…
and to treat my body like it wasn’t just functional—but worthy.

Eventually, the most rewarding part of this business came when I stopped being politically correct—
and began ushering in the spirit of ministry.

Flow happened within those four walls.
Space was held when needed.
In that moment, that’s when I realized:
this work?

It’s more than skincare.
It’s how self-care comes alive in real time.

In the Treatment Room, Self-Care Looks Like…

Showing up for your appointment even when life is lifing.
Letting go of the idea that skincare is shallow. Self-care? It’s sacred.
Receiving intentional touch—without apologizing for your stretch marks, your body hair, your shape.
Sitting still in a space that holds you without judgment.

Because when I work on someone’s skin, I’m not just applying product—
I’m operating in love and spirit.

I’ve had clients come in for a service and leave feeling lighter—
not because of hair removal or exfoliation,
but rather because something emotional was removed too.

    There’s therapy in the touch.
Power also lives in the pause.
In truth, sacredness, too, is woven through self-care.

You Are Not Required to Earn Your Rest

For so many women and men—especially those who were never taught the essence of care—
    self-care feels like a luxury.

We’re taught to give until we’re empty.
To be strong, even when we’re struggling.
To work twice as hard, rest half as much, and still smile through it all.

Yet let me say this plainly:

You are not required to earn your rest.
You don’t have to “deserve” joy, softness, or support.
Instead, your skin, your spirit, and your energy—all of it—needs tending, regularly.

Our Services Are Rituals, Not Tasks

At Skinchology, a wax is never just a wax.
A facial is never just a facial.

    Each service is a ritual.
Every one is a reset button.
Together, they’re reminders that you matter—
not just when you’re falling apart,
but especially when you’re putting yourself back together.

If you’re looking for a new ritual to add to your routine, try this belly button oiling practice rooted in ancient wisdom and modern love.

    Self-Care Is Also Spiritual Hygiene

Just like you cleanse your skin, you must also cleanse your energy.

That means checking in with how you feel—not just how you look.
It also means surrounding yourself with people who pour into you—not drain you.
And sometimes, it means knowing when to pause, when to pull back, and when to say:

“I’m not available for that today.”
    Or simply, “No.”

Ask Yourself: What Does Real Self-Care Look Like?

Not what the internet told you.
Not what the spa ads sold you.
Rather, it’s the kind of self-care that allows you to be whole,
    present,
and deeply at home in your skin.

That’s the kind we practice here.
That’s the kind that sustains you.
And ultimately, I’m honored to hold space for it.

If you’re ready to experience what true self-care feels like, book your service here – we’d be honored to hold space for you.
