Waxing Basics
And Prep

What is waxing?

Waxing is an ancient technique that is used to remove unwanted body hair. The hair is safely removed from the root of the hair follicle using warm wax and often times, muslin cloth. There are different types of waxes and techniques used by various professionals.

Brazilian waxing has become increasingly popular among women of all ages and lifestyles. The popular “Brazilian Wax” essentially removes all of the hair from the vulva area with the option of leaving a small “landing strip” or “inverted triangle.”

I recently shaved. How soon can I come in for a waxing service?

At Skinchology, we ask that clients wait at least 3–4 weeks after shaving with at least ¼ of an inch of hair growth to receive any body waxing services.

Hair grows in several different cycles and in order to receive the best possible result, it is recommended that clients DO NOT come in prematurely nor trim the hair down under any circumstances.

Facial waxing is more flexible and allows clients to come in bi-weekly to one month.

Is it safe to tan before or after waxing?

It is suggested that you wait at least 3–5 days to get waxed before or after you have tanned using a bed or outdoors. Do not receive waxing treatments if your skin is sensitive and or sunburned.

There is a potential for the skin to lift resulting in scarring. Additionally, skin that has been recently waxed is more sensitive and susceptible to sun burning. It is, however, safe to wax prior to spray tanning.

Is there anything I can do to prepare for my appointment?

On the day of your waxing appointment it is best to avoid consuming caffeine of any kind at least 5 hours before the service. Caffeine can restrict blood flow in your vessels and can increase sensitivity levels in some people.

Inflammation and sensitivity are normal reactions from waxing, especially if you’re new to waxing. As an option, you may consume 1–2 Ibuprofen at least thirty minutes to one hour before your service to decrease chances of inflammation.

How painful is waxing?

When hair is removed from the body, there is some discomfort associated. With that said many men and women tolerate the service with ease and often state that the more consistent they are with waxing, the easier it becomes.

In addition, Skinchology’s skincare therapist(s) meets clients where they are and uses a specialized technique to minimize discomfort.

Should I avoid certain oral or topical medications or creams before waxing?

Oral medication such as Accutane® and topicals that include tretinoin or Retin-A, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Differin® Gel or other forms of Adapalene, Tazorac® or other forms of Tazarotene, Benzoyl Peroxide, Stivrectin®, and ProActive® can affect the skin sensitivity level and could lead to lifting of the skin during the waxing process.

Please inform your therapist if you’ve used or currently use any of these medications or products.

Is it OK to shave between wax appointments?

No. Waxing is designed to reduce hair growth by thinning out the hair strand. Shaving in between waxing will reverse the progress made from waxing and can cause irritation and ingrown hair follicles.

How long will my wax last?

Individual results vary. Typically, clients should receive about 2–3 consecutive sessions to achieve the best results that include: increased hairlessness (2–4 weeks), softer/weaker hair and slower growth.

There is a transitional period where clients may notice patches of hair, depending on where hair may grow out quicker than expected.

Clients are then encouraged to continue with waxing for at least a 2nd time after a full cycle of re-growth. “Waxing virgins” or those that have not shaved prior to waxing may experience greater results.

How often should I receive a wax?

It is recommended that clients book for body waxing every 4–6 weeks. After the first wax is complete, the esthetician will educate you on your particular growth cycle and suggest the appropriate time frame for you to return.

Brow and facial waxing may be performed bi-weekly to one month.

What can I expect afterwards, should I be worried about ingrown hairs?

Expect to feel clean and fresh! Some clients may experience slight tenderness or minor swelling for a day or two after a fresh wax depending on your level of sensitivity.

Estheticians will assess each client’s skin and apply appropriate aftercare to minimize these side effects, however you may also take an additional dose of ibuprofen either 30 minutes to 1 hour before treatment or afterwards.

Policies And Appointments

May I get waxed during my period?

Of course! Our estheticians are trained professionals and are attentive to the personal needs of each client. Although some people tend to be more sensitive the week before and during their menstrual cycles, clients are welcomed to schedule based on their comfort level.

Note: Tampons are required during service if you are on your period. Tampons are provided by the Skinchology in the case of an emergency.

How long does the waxing appointment typically take?

Larger body parts such as legs, arms, back and chest take about 20–30 minutes. Other waxing services including the Brazilians and brows take about 10 to 20 minutes to complete.

Please note that booking times include the prep and cleanup time, therefore it is best that clients arrive on time for appointments. On rare occasions, some clients require greater accommodation.

We appreciate your consideration if treatments happen to run over.

Is Skinchology sanitary?

We pride ourselves on operating in a sanitary environment. Studios are cleaned multiple times daily using approved disinfectants and we absolutely NEVER double dip our wax sticks!

Do I need an appointment?

As time permits, we will accept walk-in clients, however we suggest that you book your appointment in advance to avoid waiting. We book popular appointments every 15–30 minutes. We ask that you please be on time to avoid losing your appointment space.

If something occurs and you need to reschedule, we would appreciate you texting or rebooking online, instead of not showing at all. We will be as flexible as possible.

Can I bring my children?

Here at Skinchology we love children and permit clients to bring their well-behaved children, if absolutely necessary.

We respectfully ask, however, that clients understand that Skinchology is not held liable for any injury that may occur, as space is limited. Bring children at your own risk.

Do you have to be a certain age to wax?

Youth under the age of 17 will not be serviced unless accompanied by a parent. Parents must then sign a release form and must be present at the time of service.

What is a “Vulvacial?”

The Vulvacial is a customized treatment for the vulva (or the top of the female anatomy). Designed to mimic a facial, the Vulvacial’s purpose is to help restore irritated and hyper-pigmented skin steaming from the results of improper shaving or waxing and harsh depilatory creams.

The treatment includes cleansing, steaming, exfoliation, extractions of ingrown hairs, masking and application of a brightening or moisturizing serum. Each Vulvacial is customized for each client.

Note: Booking time is set for 60 minutes allowing time for client consultation and questions.
